Pontkade Amsterdam

Pontkade of the NDSM wharf is an emerging district in Amsterdam North, which provides a connection between the industrial past and the vibrant future. From the 1920s to the 1980s, the NDSM shipyard was one of the largest shipyards in the world. But now it has been transformed into a place to live. For real city dwellers who like a rough edge.

Pontkade is a project in which each part has its own architecture and facade material. What the parts have in common is the raw and sturdy character of the shipyard and the functional architecture that matches the industrially efficient logic of the place. Accurate facade design while maintaining balance between all components. And JAZO has contributed to this. We were allowed to supply and install the doors, ventilation grilles and facade cladding for this beautiful project. We'll catch you up!

The challenge

Theo Scholten, project manager of JAZO, says: “This project brings together all of JAZO's shielding, access and ventilation options. Both the materials (aluminum and steel), but also the functionalities, such as fire resistance and burglary resistance. And the best part is that you cannot see from the outside which elements are fire-resistant or burglar-resistant.”

In a large project such as Pontkade Amsterdam, several parties are involved to make the project a success. “The 12 speed gates that are incorporated in the north-east facade of the building are covered with JAZO grilles. The grilles are incorporated into the tube frame of the speed gates supplier. To coordinate this properly, there has been a lot of consultation with both the contractor and the supplier, so that the dimensions match perfectly," Theo explains.

“The challenge in the courtyard lay mainly with the lattice facades adjacent to the stairs. There are a number of height differences that had to be taken into account and here too, parts of the grid facades had to be ventilated, fire-resistant and/or burglar-resistant. A lot of drawing work was required to make everything flow together beautifully, but the result was beautiful.”

One of the ten most beautiful projects in Amsterdam

We explored the possibilities together with all participating parties. In addition to being functional, our doors and ventilation grilles must also be beautiful and fit into the whole of the building. After a lot of consultation, we came up with great solutions that were suitable for all parties. And partly due to Theo Scholten and the good cooperation with various parties, Pontkade was declared one of the ten most beautiful projects built in Amsterdam last year!

Curious about our products?

Our products can be found on different sides of the building. This project includes various types of doors/fronts, ventilation grilles and facade cladding, some of which are fire and/or burglar-resistant.

The entrances to the parking facility are located on the north-east facade of the building. The speed gates are completely covered with JAZO grilles and this design flows nicely onto the facade parts around them. Various facades/doors, ventilation grilles and facade cladding have been installed in the courtyard, which even extend into the design of the stairs.
